About Pi

Exact figures, discreet advice and records built to last, for US businesses, accounting and CPA firms, and families, with every engagement led by a named partner.

The firm

An accounting and advisory practice built on a simple idea: figures should be exact, and they should stay exact.

Pi is an accounting and advisory firm serving US businesses, accounting and CPA firms, and individuals and families. We keep books, run payroll, prepare federal and state tax returns and financial statements, support audits and act as a part-time CFO.

Every engagement is led by a named partner, with a dedicated accountant rather than a rotating team, so the person preparing your figures knows the business behind them. A partner reviews each deliverable before it reaches you.

Growing companies use us as their finance function: their books, payroll, tax work and reporting and, where they want them, dedicated team members of their own. Accounting and CPA firms use us for capacity in the busy season and through the year, and families for their personal tax and the accounts behind their wealth. All of them are held to the same standard.

We work from two offices, in Jersey City, New Jersey, and Lahore, Pakistan. Meetings are held at our offices, at yours or by video.

Our philosophy

Pi never rounds. It holds for every circle ever drawn and will hold for every one still to come. We hold our accounting to the same standard: exact today, and just as sound decades from now.

Precision

A balance is either supported or it is not. We agree each account to a statement, a schedule or a source document, write down the reasoning behind every estimate, and investigate differences rather than carry them forward. When a figure leaves us, the evidence for it stays on file.

Discretion

Who our clients are is their business, not ours to share. Only the people working on your affairs can open your files, and what we learn in one engagement stays in that engagement. We would rather say too little than too much.

Permanence

Accounts are read long after they are prepared: by an auditor rolling a balance forward, a tax officer reopening a year, a buyer in due diligence, or the next generation of a family. We write our working papers for that reader, so the reasoning still makes sense when nobody who was in the room is there to explain it.

How we work

Five commitments that hold for every client, whatever the size or shape of the engagement.

  • One partner, your affairs

Your affairs sit with two people you know by name: a partner who leads the engagement and reviews the work, and a dedicated accountant who carries it out. There is no pool of staff to brief afresh each time you call.

  • Scope agreed in writing

Nothing starts on a verbal understanding. A written scope and proposal come first, then a written engagement letter, so what we will deliver, and what we need from you, is settled on paper before the first deadline.

  • Discretion by default

Confidentiality is the starting position, not something you have to request: a written agreement for every engagement, files closed to anyone not assigned to you, and an encrypted portal in place of email attachments. See security and confidentiality.

  • Professional standards

Professional indemnity insurance, identity checks on every client before work begins and a partner's review of every deliverable come with each engagement as a matter of course. The standards below explain each one.

  • Built around US filing deadlines

Where we handle your compliance, federal and state tax returns, estimated tax calculations, payroll filings and sales tax returns each have a date in the calendar we agree with you, and a named person responsible for meeting it. See US tax returns and sales and use tax.

For the ways you can engage us, how work is handed over and how we keep in touch, see how we work.

Whom we serve

US businesses from owner-managed companies to listed groups, the accounting and CPA firms that advise them, and private individuals and families.

Growing US businesses

Companies whose finance work has outgrown the founder or a part-time bookkeeper. We run the day-to-day function through accounting outsourcing, from the ledger and payroll to management accounts and year end, prepare sales and use tax returns in each state where you must file, and add senior judgement through a virtual CFO. See all our services.

Accounting and CPA firms

Firms that need dependable capacity for bookkeeping, tax preparation or audit support without adding to their own headcount. We work in the firm's software, to its checklists and review standards, and the client relationship stays with the firm. See working with accounting firms and outsourced tax preparation.

Individuals, families and family offices

High-net-worth individuals and families whose wealth spans companies, trusts, property and, often, more than one country. We prepare personal tax returns and plans, model holding structures and succession plans alongside your legal counsel, who prepares the documents, and run the accounting for family offices.

Americans living abroad

US citizens and green card holders who live outside the United States and still have US returns to file. We prepare US tax returns claiming the foreign tax credit or the foreign earned income exclusion, handle FBAR and FATCA reporting, with catch-up filings for anyone who has missed years, and align your US position with other countries through cross-border tax work.

Larger private and listed companies

Companies with finance teams of their own, which call on us for defined pieces of work: technical accounting memoranda on revenue (ASC 606), leases (ASC 842) and income taxes (ASC 740), internal control reviews, due diligence on acquisitions and disposals, and dedicated team members who work inside their systems.

Outsourcing and global solutions

Specialist arrangements alongside our core services: a dedicated team of your own, working to your procedures, and medical billing and revenue cycle support for US practices. For businesses with operations in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain or Pakistan, we provide accounting, tax and compliance there. See our global solutions.

The standards we work under

Obligations that apply to every engagement, whoever the client and wherever they are.

  • Partner review

A partner reviews every deliverable before it reaches you, from a month's reconciliations to a tax return or a set of financial statements, asking whether each figure is supported and each judgement sound.

  • Professional indemnity insurance

Pi maintains professional indemnity insurance in respect of the work it carries out for clients.

  • Replies within one business day

Routine queries are answered within one business day, by the people who know your records rather than a general helpdesk.

  • Written confidentiality

A written confidentiality agreement accompanies each engagement, so the promise to keep your affairs private is a contractual one, not only a matter of practice.

  • Anti-money-laundering checks

Before work begins, we verify the identity of every client and of its beneficial owners, the individuals who ultimately own or control it.

  • Independence

We cannot audit a company whose books we maintain. Where we keep your books, your audit is carried out by another firm, and we can prepare you for it through audit support.

Speak with a partner

Every enquiry is read by a partner and answered within one business day. Meetings are held at our offices, at yours, or by video.
